Hovatron - Mixtape Vol. I (2008):

A young cohort of the Megasoid crew, formerly (?) known as Mofomatronix. He’s remixed singles and performed at Megasoid’s monthly Turbo Crunk parties, but this is his first full mixtape under the name Hovatron. Though his style tends to be glitchier than the Megasoid guys, they’re united under the common love of headknocking futuristic beats, dirty hip hop, and bass, bass, bass.

The Montreal based turbo-crunk/streetbass/lazer bass/gettotech duo is back with more of those block rockin’ beats. For musicians putting out such an immediately accessible sound, it’s amazing how much trouble these guys have had pinning down a name for the genre. Words aside, this mix is all about the beats. BASS heavy remixes of gun-talk hip hop and dancehall, it sounds like a soundtrack for the urban future. Should be played at high volume, preferably in a residential area.

Last one for now. This live 2-CD set was recorded at the Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, Holland. Here’s a bit of what the press release has to say about this massive recording:

“Unexpectedly, Earthless wound up on the main stage of the festival in front of 2,000 rabid fans, mere moments before they were to headline The Batcave (a room with 200 person capacity). Live At Roadburn came about not so much by default but out of sheer necessity. When the headlining band at the festival did not use their two hour time slot on the main stage, concert organizers were left scrambling to find a replacement to fill the slot.

Earthless gladly accepted the opportunity and proceeded to lay waste to all that was surrounding them for a straight hour and a half of visual mind and audio massacre! Told of the recordings, the band had a few listens and decided that it was the most honest document that they could offer, for they were caught in their natural environment - the live show.”

Frankly, I couldn’t agree more.

Amazing prog-rock from the tiny West Coast burn-out haven that is Santa Cruz, and one of my favorites of ‘07. Reverb laden vocals buried in the mix seem intended to summon some ancient god from the watery depths; dueling guitar wizardry justifies the 20+ minute jams. Sabbath, meet Yes. Yes, this is Sabbath.
